Explore New Paltz, NY

New Paltz, NY is just 90 minutes from Manhattan — a vibrant college town with an expected lively music scene, plenty of charming eateries, boutiques, cafes, and the SUNY New Paltz college campus with all its cultural and social activities.

Rent a bicycle and spend the day of the Walkill Valley Rail Trail, which meanders along the Wallkill River. Or take a walking tour of Historic Huguenot Street and explore this wonderful 17th-century community with guided tours of the churches, homes, and archaeological sites of New Paltz's first settlers.

But for me, Mohonk Preserve is the crown jewel of New Paltz. Access is just 5 minutes from the village past the local farmers’ market and you can explore over 110 miles of trails and carriage roads for hiking, biking, or running. The trails are groomed constantly so it offers year-round enjoyment. I love to hike to Duck Pond and up to the Bell Tower of Mohonk Mountain House or Bonticou Crag. The views are spectacular, and the hike walks you through existing farmland, past streams, and meadows, a true nature lover’s paradise.

The Shawangunk Ridge, or "The Gunks" is the backdrop for all of this beauty. The ridge is a world-class rock climbing destination for the more adventurous, home to a plethora of wildlife. The Nature Conservancy has recognized Shawangunk Ridge's scenic cliffs, plateaus, and open meadows as being one of earth's "last great places."

New Paltz is the perfect destination to get away from it all. Charming country roads, stone walls, farms, and thousands of acres of protected open space. The town is small enough to have a rich sense of community spirit but large enough to offer five-star dining as well as a picnic by the river.

A few of my favorite places to eat…

Main Street Bistro

Main Street Bistro is a must if you’re looking for a healthy quick bite. Serving breakfast and lunch, they’ve been a staple in town for over 25 years. It’s very popular and a fun place to take in the local color. Plus, they’re right next to the River to Ridge Trail, so it’s a great place to power up before or after a hike. My favorite is the Santa Cruz —grilled chicken breast, avocado, red onion, sprouts, and basil pesto mayo. Pair it with one of the many local beers they offer and wow! The Bistro has something for everyone, including an excellent vegan menu as well.

The Parish Restaurant & Bar

The Parish is located in the Water Street Market (which you shouldn’t miss either — lots of great shops selling local fare). This favorite has something for everyone, with an emphasis on New Orleans Style cuisine. Located upstairs with a great bar crowd and outdoor seating overlooking the Gunks offering the best sunset views in the area. My go-to is the citrus salad and crabcakes (or the Jambalaya). Everything is fresh and delicious, and the views can’t be beat.

Hokkaido

One of my favorites when I get that craving for sushi. The owner, Jerry, has created a warm soothing atmosphere. Sit at the sushi bar and watch the artists at work or at a quiet table (in season you can sit in the outdoor garden). The sushi is always fresh and tastes like it was caught that very same day. The special rolls are creative but I like it simple so I can really taste the freshness. All good, always!
